Genius Hour Reflection
Reflecting on My Genius Hour Experience
What have I learned about my topic to this point?
Through the exploration and research of my Genius Hour project topic on inclusion and inclusive classrooms I have learned many useful strategies and gained knowledge that I can use in my teaching practice.
To fully understand my topic of inclusion, I learned that inclusion can be represented and explained in many ways but it can be simply defined as a sense of acceptance and belonging. Some main things that I learned were the importance of inclusive education and how it provides all students regardless of their abilities an opportunity to learn in the same environment with the use of accommodations and support from education workers. Furthermore, I learned what components are needed to make an inclusive classroom and strategies that can help you achieve it.
Through the exploration of inclusive education, I learned many instructional strategies on how to create inclusive lessons. With this new knowledge I was able to use an ordinary lesson and adapt it to make it inclusive for all students. During this process, I also learned about new applications and technological tools that can be used to enhance student learning and support students with learning disabilities and exceptionalities.

Was I able to accomplish my objectives?
I was able to accomplish my objectives that I wanted to explore about my topic. The objectives were:
- Define inclusion & students perceptions/experiences of inclusion within the classroom
- Research experiences from other teachers in how they create inclusive classrooms
- Learn ways on how to change an ordinary lesson to create an inclusive activity
- Explore a new resource or tools (technology based) that help create inclusive lessons
What have I learned about myself during this Genius Hour Project?
During my Genius Hour project, I learned many things about myself. This project made me realize the importance of setting goals and conducting research on topics that I am passionate about. Also, this Genius Hour project made me learn more about myself in relation to the type of teacher I aspire to be and how inclusion is an important thing I would like to foster and develop in my classroom environment.
What will I do next? Next Steps?
Using the information and resources that I have compiled I will try and use these strategies within my placement teaching blocks. My placement has many students that require modifications and accommodations due to learning disabilities and exceptionalities. Therefore, it is important that I create an inclusive environment that allows for all students to be supported in their learning.
What do you think about Genius Hour as an instructional strategy?
I really enjoyed Genius Hour because I was able to explore something that I was passionate about. I found that Genius Hour is a great way for students to be at the center of their learning and provides them with choice and fosters ownership of their work. Also, I believe that Genius hour is a good instructional strategy because it allows students to be creative, can promote inquiry based learning as students are able to question and explore their passions, and it is very engaging which will promote student motivation. Moreover, Genius Hour can be a good instructional strategy because students are not only learning new knowledge about their topic but they are gaining and developing research skills, new ways to present information, and how to write and organize information in an appropriate way for their desired audience.
